Velvet Takchita: The Fabric for Winter Weddings

Velvet is the oldest fabric used for the Moroccan kaftan, the fabric of the gold-thread embroidered takchitas of Fez and Rabat. Dense and deep, it absorbs light and brings out every embroidery stitch. A velvet takchita is worn from November to March, when venues are cool and lightweight outfits are no longer enough. Over a satin or crepe tahtiya, the velvet fouqia adds the weight and structure that create a ceremonial silhouette.

Plain, Embroidered, or Hammered Velvet

Velvet embroidered with gold or silver thread on the sleeves and bodice is the most traditional version. Plain velvet, cinched with a substantial mdamma, creates a more contemporary look. Hammered or devoré velvet, with its raised patterns, falls somewhere between the two. The colors that suit it best are plum, burgundy, bottle green, midnight blue, and black.

How do you care for a velvet takchita?

Dry clean only, and never iron it directly: steaming from a distance is enough to lift the pile. Store it hanging, without folds, to prevent marks.

Does velvet make you look heavier?

Quality velvet, properly cut and cinched at the waist, actually structures the silhouette. It is thick velvet without a belt that creates bulk.
